My Mahjong Learning Journey: Episode 1

It started during a long weekend trip back home. I was supposed to be relaxing — beach time, seafood from Joe Patti's, a flyover from the Blue Angels, maybe a slow cruise down Perdido Key Drive followed by a morning walk on Johnson's Beach (my personal center-of-gravity spot). Instead, Pensacola did what Pensacola always does - handed me a whole new obsession. I found myself in a full Mahjong immersion with a few friends and a gem of a Mahjong teacher who had just launched a Mahjong league in Perdido, FL. Only in Pensacola do you go home for a breather and end up in school again. Before our Saturday session, she sent me to the Southern Sparrow Mahj 101 YouTube series. I watched the whole thing like it was a true-crime documentary. By the time Saturday rolled around, I had just enough knowledge to nod confidently while still being 50% confused. That Saturday became my unofficial Mahj 101 immersion class. We practiced hands, walked through the card, and played a couple of games. I even got my first Mahjong, which felt like winning a tiny lottery. Then Sunday came, and I played with a table full of newbies just like me — and that was it. I was absolutely hooked.

Back in Houston: The Spiral Begins

When I got back to Houston, I didn’t even unpack before Googling “Mahjong open tables near me.” Within a week, I had bought my first set of tiles and started showing up at open tables one to two days a week like I’d been doing this for years - fully committed, zero shame.

And let me tell you — the Mahjong community is something special. Everyone (well… mostly everyone) is welcoming, patient, and genuinely excited to help new players learn. It’s like joining a secret society, except instead of cryptic rituals, you get snacks and tile racks.

Continue Building the Foundation: Mahj 102

Once I realized this wasn’t a phase, I signed up for the follow up to Mahj 101 — Mahj 102 — to build my confidence level. The class, videos, and online practice sessions helped me understand the things I had been pretending to understand in Pensacola: more in depth on sections, hands and strategies during the Charleston, why the Charleston is a good thing (and yes, I starting to love it) and how to stop looking panicked every time someone discards a tile I desperately want but absolutely cannot pick up.

Six weeks into my Mahjong journey, I wrapped up Mahj 102, feeling like a beginner who finally knows what she doesn’t know — which is progress.

Mahjong4Friends: My First Digital Playground

After a few real-world games, I realized I needed practice. Lots of practice. Enter Mahjong4Friends, which quickly became my nightly study buddy.

It’s simple, it’s free, and it lets me play American Mahjong with the 2026 card against bots who don’t judge my questionable discards. It tracks stats, lets me play with friends, and gives me a safe place to make mistakes without someone across the table raising an eyebrow.

It’s basically the Mahjong equivalent of practicing scales on a piano — repetitive, structured, and surprisingly satisfying.

I Love Mahj: Where Practice Starts Feeling Real

Eventually, I wanted something closer to the real table experience. That’s when I found I Love Mahj (ILM) — and everything changed.

ILM feels like sitting at an actual table -- minus the snacks and side-eye. The bots behave like humans (including the occasional chaos), the suggested hands make sense, and the whole experience feels more like a real game.

But the best part is the Exercise Room. It has everything:

• Make-a-Hand Options so I can learn the card faster.
• Charleston Practice so passing tiles doesn’t feel like a crisis.
• What Hand Is That? which turns me into a Mahjong detective.
• Heavenly Hands, which celebrate those rare “instant Mahjong” deals.

It’s $60 a year, and honestly, worth every penny for how much it’s helped me learn.

Where I Am Now

Six weeks in, I’m juggling:

• open tables 1–2 days a week,
• Mahjong4Friends for structured practice,
• ILM for realistic gameplay and drills,
• and the occasional moment of “Wait…did I just make a smart discard?”

I’m not playing faster yet — but I am playing with more intention, curiosity, and joy. And for someone who learned the game during a Pensacola weekend with friends, that feels like a pretty solid start --- bless it.
