Adventures in Home Assistant: Episode 1

After years of sitting on my stack of future projects gently reminding me to just try it, I finally installed Home Assistant. Unexpected surprise, joy and chaos ensued.

Adventures in Home Assistant: Episode 1

In which I finally automate something other than my procrastination

For years, Home Assistant sat quietly on my ToDo list.
Not judging me.
Not nagging me.
Just… waiting.
Like a polite little automation goblin whispering, “Whenever you’re ready, Gail.”

A few months ago, I finally decided I was ready. I dusted off a Raspberry Pi, plugged in some cables that definitely weren’t labeled, and embarked on my journey into the world of home automation.

🧪 First Impressions: This Thing Is Way Too Smart

I expected Home Assistant to be a cute little dashboard where I could turn lights on and off like a digital gremlin.

Instead, it became:

  • My personal assistant
  • My household organizer
  • My dog‑feeding accountability coach
  • My weather oracle
  • My security system
  • My media butler
  • And occasionally, my chaos generator

Raspberry Pi solving the dog's hunger problems.

Yes, I programmed a reminder to feed the dogs.
Yes, it works.
Yes, I feel judged when it pops up.
