When Your Utilities Start Talking Back

(Sometimes Loudly)

There’s a point in every Home Assistant journey where you stop automating lights and start interrogating your house like it’s hiding secrets. Because it is. At least, mine certainly did. And those secrets didn’t reveal themselves in one dramatic moment — they unfolded as a series of events across two different houses, in two different states, about six months apart. Close enough together that I finally admitted I needed more than convenience automations. I needed monitoring. I needed early warning. I needed something that would tap me on the shoulder before a problem turned into an expensive renovation project or utility bill.

The electric story started at our Texas house, thanks to a Span IO panel (that’s a future episode). It casually revealed that my pool pumps were quietly burning as much energy as both AC units combined, happily churning away like they owned the place. They weren’t misbehaving — I was. Running them all day, every day, all summer to keep the chemicals balanced and the algae out of the pool. Intelligent cycling wasn’t optional; it was overdue.

Clearly, that salesman that sold us on variable speed pumps running longer and using 50-80% less energy than the single speed pumps they replaced...well lied. That's a future automation in itself. I currently have it on a 2-4 hour cycles a few times a day, but, clearly, more optimization is in our future there.

The water story was split between states. The 18,000‑gallon leak happened at our Florida house — the one we’re saving for future retirement. We’re not there full‑time, so when an underground pipe failed between the meter and the house, it went completely unnoticed. And because the water company runs on a 60‑day billing cycle, we didn’t discover the problem until two months later. By then, the leak had flushed 18,000 gallons of fresh-metered water straight into the sulfur‑rich aquifer our neighbor taps into to water his lawn. The sudden disappearance of the rotten‑egg smell every time the neighbor watered their lawn should have been a clue. The FL house doesn’t have a smart meter yet — it’s on the to‑do list for our next visit. Working out the radio signal monitoring kinks while I am in Texas so that I can install it over a weekend during a future visit.

After all that, utility tracking stopped being a curiosity and became a pseudo‑alarm system — a way to spot trouble before it turned into an expensive lesson. Once you connect your utilities to Home Assistant, they stop being background noise and start talking back — sometimes politely, sometimes urgently, and sometimes in ways that make you rethink every pipe, pump, and appliance you’ve ever owned.

Electricity: The Smart Meter Texas Saga

Everyone’s smart‑meter journey will be different. In our case, the Texas electricity grid is its own ecosystem — retail providers, delivery companies, ESIDs, meters that look like they were designed by four different manufacturers who never spoke to each other. But the one unifying force is Smart Meter Texas, the statewide portal that quietly collects 15‑minute usage data for almost every home.

My meter turned out to be an Itron — a sturdy little digital box with a meter number stamped on the front like a VIN. The ESID was buried in my electric bill, naturally in the least convenient place. Once I created my Smart Meter Texas account, the portal opened up like a time capsule: every spike, every dip, every moment the oven decided to impersonate a small star.

We have two Home Assistant integrations for electric power:

(1) Texas Smart Meter integration, which collects data from the power company.

(2) Span IO Panel integration, which collects data from my smart electrical panel.

Both slurped in their respective data streams, and suddenly my energy dashboard looked like a cardiogram. The house had a heartbeat — measured from both inside and out.

Water: The Sensus Analytics Plot Twist

Electricity was civilized. Water was chaos.

Water meters live in the ground, in a box that doubles as a tiny wildlife habitat. Our neighborhood in Texas uses Sensus Analytics, accessible through the local water company portal. The URL looks like someone forgot to finish typing, but once you log in, you get beautiful graphs of your water usage… and sometimes, horrifying ones.

Had I set up smart‑meter integrations on the houses six months earlier, I would have known long before the Florida water bill arrived and slapped us in the gut. Who knew a connector replacement part that costs less than $15 could have saved us over $400 in water bills over a two‑month period?

So here we are, monitoring our utility usage to alert us to the next potential costly disaster.

Home Assistant: The Utility Whisperer

Once both portals were connected, Home Assistant became the central nervous system of my utilities. Electric usage flowed in from Smart Meter Texas. Water usage trickled (or occasionally surged catastrophically) in from Sensus Analytics. My dashboards started to resemble the control room of a small spaceship.

There’s something strangely comforting about seeing your home’s resource consumption laid bare. The spikes when the oven turns on. The gentle overnight water slope. The mystery blip at 3 a.m. that you swear wasn’t you.

And now, after a few costly lessons, those graphs feel less like data and more like early warning systems.

A Teaser for a Future Episode: Gas, the Final Boss

Electricity and water have portals. They have logins. They have dashboards designed by committees.

Gas meters? They broadcast their secrets via tiny radio bursts into the air like cryptids.

Interesting note, there are a lot of information systems that use similar radio bursts in the 900Mz broadcast range. To read them, you don’t log into a website — you listen. You grab an RTL‑SDR (RealTek - Software-Defined Radio) dongle, fire up rtl_433, and suddenly you’re decoding packets from a meter that has no idea you exist. Possible use cases also include Florida utility meters, weather stations, remote temperature and humidity sensors, leak detectors, remote control devices, and more.

Note that an RTL‑SDR can receive a wide range of signals — including ADS‑B aircraft broadcasts, ACARS messages, and AIS ship traffic — but only with the right antenna and only when those signals are within range. Some aviation and maritime systems, especially military or encrypted digital modes, are not accessible or decodable with consumer SDR hardware.

RTL‑SDRs are RF magic. It’s nerd nirvana. And it deserves its own episode.
